Drawing and comics: Art at the library

This week, let’s highlight art.

There are a lot of examples of art in the children’s room, from our posters and framed pictures to the covers of books. Photography is a type of art and is often featured on the covers of nonfiction books. Did you see our shark display last month? There were photos of sharks on the covers of many of the books. Picture books contain a lot of artwork, mostly in the form of illustrations. Do you have a favorite picture book?& What do you like about the pictures?

Finally, graphic novels contain visual art, often combining drawings with words in speech balloons. Examples of graphic novels include The Babysitters Club, Dog Man, My Little Pony, I Survived and Boxcar Children. If you notice, a lot of books that were written as chapter books are now being adapted to graphic novels.

Comic books are full of art. In fact, this Saturday, August 14 is Free Comic Book day. We are planning on having free comic books at the library on Saturday and superhero bookmarks. (One per child, while supplies last!)
